I’ve worked with hundreds, if not thousands, of businesses that have come in all shapes and sizes on their Organic Search Engine Optimization…
…and there’s a mistake that many of them make that crushes their ability to make money with SEO…
…and I’ve seen many people in my own industry make the same mistake!
However, let me be clear — I believe SEO is the most profitable form of digital marketing…
Yet, it is the most misunderstood…
Therefore, a lot of wasted time, energy, and money gets flushed down the toilet with SEO…
…I HATE waste (probably from my previous life as an industrial/efficiency engineer at Texas Instruments)…
And so some people throw their hands up in the air and say, “SEO doesn’t work! All these guys are scammers!”
You see, Google intentionally puts out false information and half-truths to cause businesses to make mistakes…
Much of this information gets regurgitated by people who don’t really understand what is going on…
You have a bunch of bloggers on the internet blogging about SEO who have never actually ranked a website themselves!!
…Please stop and think about that for a second…
…There is so much BS floating out there about SEO that it is staggering…
Part of the issue is that some if it is wrapped up in half-truths, so there’s a grain of truth to it to the point that a small amount of people can use the half-truths (while doing other important not often talked about things or having other natural huge advantages) to be successful.
So, a business owner goes online to learn information about this “rank website in Google” thing…
…this is a natural, expected, and completely normal thing to do!
…but it is wrought with pitfalls…
And it causes a false sense of understanding…
For example, you read an article on “How to rank your website in Google…” and your brain gives you a hit that tells you you’ve learned something and now you understand better…
Maybe you read more articles…
Hell, you’re a studious guy/gal, so you spend a whole weekend reading and studying up on SEO…
Now, you really know what it takes to rank in Google…right?
WRONG!
Your brain is tricking you.
SEO is a very complicated beast…
…that didn’t exist 20 years ago
…where no one in the world — even employees at Google — fully understands all the implications
…where you have the regurgitation fiesta of bad information that has persisted for many years
Listen, can I watch YouTube videos of Dirk shooting a basketball for a weekend and suddenly be a great shooter?
…let’s even say I spend another weekend with him teaching me…am I a great shooter now?
NO!
Just like shooting a basketball, it takes a lot of reps in SEO to fully understand what is going on…
You have to experience it first hand…you have to live it… feel it…in many different circumstances with many different outcomes…
…in order to truly understand, for the most part, what it really takes to rank your website…
So, what’s the biggest mistake?
Believing in that false sense of understanding I mentioned above…
Believing you’ve spent time doing your research and now you understand.
I don’t say this to be a jerk or to pump up my ego…
…but, I promise you, there’s a 99.99% chance that you don’t understand.
Let me put it this way…I’ve been doing SEO full time for 7.5 years…I’m a computer geek…I do this all day every day…I’ve worked on hundreds, if not thousands, of SEO projects…and I still won’t claim to know all that there is to know about SEO for every different business.
Do I understand the fundamental pieces that are core to Google’s algorithm?
Yes, I believe so, but only because I’ve taken thousands of actions and seen thousands of results based upon those actions…
My understanding is built upon real world data and NOT theory…
